Grandma Clara always called this her “budget-friendly magic recipe” whenever times were hard.

This classic Potato Candy recipe is a clever old-fashioned treat that transforms simple pantry ingredients into a soft, sweet pinwheel dessert. The mashed potatoes help create a smooth dough that blends perfectly with powdered sugar, giving it a texture that’s easy to roll and shape. Paired with creamy peanut butter, these candy spirals are rich, nostalgic, and surprisingly simple to make.

Potato Candy Pinwheels
Ingredients
Ingredient Amount
Cold plain mashed potatoes 1/4 cup
Powdered sugar 4–5 cups
Creamy peanut butter 1/2 cup

Directions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough
Place the cold mashed potatoes in a medium bowl. Gradually mix in the powdered sugar, adding one cup at a time, until a thick dough forms.

Tip: Make sure the potatoes are plain and completely cooled. Added butter, milk, or warmth can make the dough too sticky to handle properly.

Step 2: Roll the Dough
Lightly dust your work surface with powdered sugar. Roll the dough into a rectangle about 12×8 inches and approximately 1/4-inch thick.

Tip: If the dough sticks while rolling, sprinkle a little extra powdered sugar on the surface or rolling pin.

Step 3: Add the Peanut Butter
Warm the peanut butter slightly so it spreads easily. Coat the dough evenly, leaving a small border around one edge.

Tip: Leaving a border helps keep the filling from squeezing out while rolling.

Step 4: Form the Log
Starting from the long side, carefully roll the dough into a tight log shape.

Step 5: Chill and Slice
Wrap the log and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or freeze for about 30 minutes, until firm.

Tip: Chilling helps the candy hold its shape and makes slicing much cleaner and easier.

Slice into pinwheels and serve chilled or at room temperature.
