For twenty years I watched my mother Stephanie feed a homeless man named Victor who lived behind our rental house. Growing up in a struggling household I deeply resented watching her give away our limited food to a stranger especially when our electricity was sometimes shut off. I often confronted her about prioritizing him over our own needs but she simply insisted he required help and refused to explain further. Eventually I moved out and stopped asking questions though I occasionally noticed Victor doing quiet repairs around our property or mysteriously leaving winter boots for me when mine broke.
When my mother fell terminally ill she made me promise to continue feeding Victor and warned me to keep my Uncle Mark away from a hidden blue box. After her funeral I found my uncle already digging through her belongings under the guise of helping which made me deeply suspicious. The next morning I cooked a meal and walked outside to find Victor standing near an empty shelter wearing clean clothes alongside our neighbor Mrs Bell.
He was holding a silver locket my mother claimed she had lost during my childhood and he revealed a photograph inside that changed everything. Realizing his deceit was finally uncovered and completely unsupported by anyone in the room Mark dropped the box and abandoned the house in defeat. That evening instead of sending a plastic container of food out the back door I invited my Uncle Victor to sit at our kitchen table where he truly belonged.
