5 Kitchen Appliances You Should Unplug Before Bed for a Safer Home

Small habits in the kitchen can make a difference when it comes to home safety. The article explains that certain countertop appliances can create unnecessary risks when they are left plugged in overnight, especially if they generate heat, have damaged wiring, or are located near materials that can catch fire. Unplugging them when they are not being used can also reduce standby electricity consumption.

1. Air Fryers
Air fryers operate at high temperatures and can remain warm after cooking. Damaged cords, plugs, outlets, or internal wiring may increase the risk of electrical problems. The article recommends unplugging the air fryer after use, allowing it to cool completely, and keeping it away from towels, paper, curtains, plastic bags, and other flammable materials.

2. Toaster Ovens
Toaster ovens contain heating elements and can collect crumbs, grease, and food particles. These materials may increase the risk of overheating or fire if the appliance malfunctions. Before going to bed, unplug the toaster oven, clean its interior, and never place items on top of it.

3. Electric Kettles
Although electric kettles normally shut off automatically, their safety mechanisms can fail. A damaged thermostat, loose connection, or dry heating element could create a problem if the kettle remains plugged in. After boiling water, unplug it and check its base for moisture, cracks, or scorch marks.

4. Coffee Makers
Coffee makers, particularly models with warming plates, can remain hot for extended periods. Old wiring, coffee residue, paper filters, or nearby clutter can increase potential risks. The article recommends turning the coffee maker off, letting it cool, cleaning it, and unplugging it after use.

5. Older Microwaves
Older microwaves deserve extra attention. Warning signs include damaged doors, worn insulation, sparks, unusual smells, buzzing noises, or repeatedly tripping a circuit breaker. An old countertop microwave that is rarely used can be unplugged when unnecessary, while built-in units should be handled carefully and inspected by a qualified professional if problems occur.

The article also explains that some appliances consume small amounts of electricity even when switched off, known as standby or “phantom” power. Unplugging unused devices or using a properly rated power strip can reduce wasted energy.

Finally, keep electrical cords away from water and hot surfaces, replace damaged appliances, avoid overloaded outlets, keep appliances clean, and plug large appliances directly into wall outlets. Taking a few seconds before bed to unplug small appliances and clear the kitchen can contribute to a safer home and reduce unnecessary energy use.
