Teen boy drowns while saving four young children from powerful currents – his family reveals his legacy

The pain of losing Bryce Brooks has not faded for his father, Shivy. He calls it “immeasurable and never-ending.” Yet within the grief, he carries pride that his 16-year-old son gave his life to save others.

In April 2023, during a family trip to Pensacola, Florida, Bryce saw four young children struggling in rip currents. With no lifeguards in sight, he and two friends ran into the surf to help. Despite being pulled by the current himself, Bryce called not for his own rescue but for the children’s.

Rescuers arrived quickly, but Bryce and family friend Charles “Uncle Chuck” Johnson II were airlifted to hospitals. Bryce suffered cardiac arrest and did not survive. Johnson, a father of three, also lost his life while trying to help.

“The selflessness it takes for someone so young to act like that—it makes us proud,” Shivy said. “Atlanta raised kids who would risk their lives for strangers.” Bryce’s mother, Crystal, echoed: “The pain remains, but so does our pride.”

In the months since, Shivy’s social media has become a diary of grief and remembrance: missed birthdays, school days without Bryce, and the heartbreaking moment of telling his younger son that big brother was gone.

Amid the heartbreak, a legacy has formed. The Bryce Brooks Foundation now funds free swim lessons, lifeguard certifications for teens, and drowning-prevention programs. It has already awarded scholarships, including one to Johnson’s son.

“Bryce is a hero,” Shivy said. “We’ll never see him grow into the man he was becoming, but he stepped into manhood the moment he saved those kids.”

Some heroes wear uniforms. Bryce wore swim trunks, acting on instinct and courage. At 16, he proved that compassion and sacrifice can define a life, no matter how brief.
