This strange disorder occurs when the tiny projections on the tongue, called papillae, grow longer than usual and don’t shed properly. These elongated papillae can trap food, bacteria, tobacco, and dead cells, leading to a discolored, hairy appearance. Smoking, poor oral hygiene, excessive coffee or tea intake, and some antibiotics are known triggers.
