Fishy Odor in the Genital Area: What It Means.  A strong or fishy smell is usually a sign of an infection or imbalance—not poor hygiene.

Common Causes:

  1. Bacterial Vaginosis (BV):
    Overgrowth of vaginal bacteria.
Symptoms: Gray/white discharge, fishy smell (worse after sex), itching.
    Needs antibiotics.

  2. Trichomoniasis:
    STI caused by a parasite.
    Green/yellow discharge, odor, itching.
    Needs prescription meds.

  3. Poor Hygiene/Sweat:
Tight clothes or infrequent washing can cause odor—not always fishy.

  4. Forgotten Tampons/Menstruation:
Can cause a strong, rotten smell.

See a Doctor If:
– Odor is persistent or worsening
– You have discharge, itching, or discomfort
– There’s a chance of an STI or forgotten tampon

Prevention & Care:
– Wash gently with mild soap (don’t douche)
– Wear cotton underwear, change sweaty clothes
– Practice safe sex
– Avoid scented products
– Ask your doctor about probiotics
