Michael Douglas reveals heartbreaking exit from acting

After nearly 60 years in Hollywood, Michael Douglas, 80, says he’s ready to slow down — and maybe even step away from acting — before he “drops dead on the set.” Douglas first made his mark producing One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at 31, later becoming a major star in Wall Street, Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, and more. In recent years, he appeared in Marvel’s Ant-Man films and The Kominsky Method, while also running his production company, Further Films.

By 2022, the workload became too much, and Douglas took an intentional break, focusing on health, family, and supporting wife Catherine Zeta-Jones’s career. His decision is shaped by surviving stage IV tongue cancer in 2010, which reinforced the importance of choosing projects carefully.

He’s not fully retired, though — his upcoming film Looking Through Water, co-starring his son Cameron, is in post-production. For now, Douglas says he’s happy on the sidelines, waiting for something truly special to bring him back.
