Having striped or ridged nails

Noticing vertical or horizontal lines on your nails? What might seem like a minor cosmetic issue could actually be a subtle signal from your body about your overall health. Nails often reflect more than just hygiene or aesthetics—they can provide insight into nutrition, stress levels, and even underlying medical conditions. While some variations are normal and harmless, others may serve as important clues warranting attention. Understanding the causes and implications of these changes is essential for maintaining both nail and overall health.

Understanding Nail Lines: Vertical vs. Horizontal
Nails can develop two main types of lines: vertical (longitudinal) ridges and horizontal lines (Beau’s lines). Each type has different implications, and distinguishing between them can help you interpret what your body might be communicating.

Vertical Lines
Vertical lines run from the cuticle to the tip of the nail. They are also called longitudinal ridges and tend to appear gradually over time. In many cases, vertical lines are a natural part of aging. As we grow older, nails may develop subtle ridges due to changes in keratin production, the protein that forms nails. While vertical lines are often harmless, pronounced ridges may sometimes indicate deficiencies in nutrients like vitamin B12, zinc, or iron, or conditions affecting circulation.
