Doctors separated conjoined twins who were joined at the chest: here’s what they look like 3 years later

In Northern Ireland, the Bateson family spent years hoping for a miracle. After a long journey through fertility treatment, their dream finally came true: they were expecting twin daughters. But the joy of that moment quickly shifted when doctors shared unexpected news — the girls were conjoined twins, fused from the chest down to the pelvis. On the ultrasound screen, the mother could see two beating hearts. Annabelle and Isabelle shared a liver, intestines, bladder, and one leg. Each twin had her own leg, but their bodies were so closely connected that even experienced surgeons could not immediately determine whether a safe separation was possible. The girls were born in March 2022 at University College Hospital in London. Immediately after delivery, they were transferred to one of the UK’s leading children’s hospitals, where a specialized medical team began preparing for what would be the defining operation of their lives.Over the following months, doctors studied detailed scans, built 3D models of the twins’ shared organs and blood vessels, and practiced the complex procedure through advanced virtual simulations. Every step was designed to give each girl the best chance of living independently. In September 2022, the day finally arrived — a moment filled with both fear and hope. More than thirty surgeons, nurses, and specialists gathered in two operating rooms, ready to begin the lengthy and delicate procedure.

After eighteen hours of intense, coordinated work, the moment everyone had prayed for finally came: Annabelle and Isabelle lay on separate operating tables for the first time. Both survived the separation, each with one leg of her own.

The weeks that followed were demanding. The twins spent long periods in intensive care, undergoing additional surgeries and countless dressing changes. In total, they have undergone around twenty procedures since birth.
