After twenty-two years of marriage, the narrator is devastated when her husband, Greg, suddenly announces that he wants a divorce. One evening, while she is preparing his favorite chili, he places signed divorce papers on the table and tells her they have grown apart. When she asks whether another woman is involved, he denies it. His explanation offers little comfort, especially because their relationship had seemed normal, filled with affection and shared plans.
Struggling with loneliness and sleepless nights, she eventually accepts her daughter’s suggestion to take a cruise. Although traveling alone feels frightening, she hopes the ocean and a change of scenery will help her begin rebuilding her life.
On the first evening, she watches other passengers enjoying themselves while she sits alone, overwhelmed by memories of her marriage. The following morning, she meets an older stranger named Arthur in a quiet lounge. Noticing her wedding ring, he asks whether her husband is enjoying the cruise. She explains that she is traveling alone after her divorce.
Rather than offering empty reassurance, Arthur listens and asks a thought-provoking question: why do some people leave just when everything seems fine?
Arthur then shares his own painful experience. His wife died several years earlier after a marriage that lasted nearly forty years. He explains that, despite their love, they sometimes hid their fears and feelings from each other. His wife worried about growing old, while he feared becoming a burden.
Arthur takes a worn photograph from his pocket, showing himself with his late wife, and explains that love is not measured only by how long people stay together, but also by what they learn from one another. He suggests that Greg might be running from something within himself, although that does not excuse the pain he caused.
Over the following days, the narrator and Arthur continue talking. She gradually begins enjoying the cruise, laughing, trying new food, and taking photographs without constantly wishing someone were beside her.
