The emergency room fell silent.
Dr. Teague looked from Master Chief Holloway to Annie, struggling to understand what was happening.
“Looking for her? She’s a nurse here.”
Holloway didn’t even glance at him.
“That’s not who she is, Doctor.”
Annie swallowed hard. For six years, she’d tried to bury the person she had once been. Now, standing beneath the harsh hospital lights, she could feel that past closing in around her.
“Ray,” she whispered. “You shouldn’t have come.”
The master chief’s expression softened.
“We didn’t have a choice. Daniel’s been asking for you.”
At the mention of that name, Annie’s hand instinctively reached beneath her scrubs, touching the second set of dog tags.
“Daniel?” Her voice broke. “He’s alive?”
Holloway nodded toward the wounded soldier on the stretcher.
“He’s the one we brought in.”
Annie stared at the young man lying motionless beneath the oxygen mask. His uniform was soaked with blood, and the monitor showed his dangerously unstable condition.
For a moment, she couldn’t move.
Then the nurse everyone called Mouse stepped forward.
“Prepare for immediate intervention. I need his injury details, vital signs, and everything you’ve done during transport. Now.”
Her voice was calm, firm, and unmistakably authoritative.
The team sprang into action.
Teague began to object, but Holloway finally turned toward him.
“Six years ago, Lieutenant Annie Keller led a combat medical evacuation team during an operation overseas. When their unit came under attack, she stayed behind to treat wounded personnel while others evacuated.”
He paused.
“She saved eleven soldiers that night. Daniel was the twelfth.”
Annie kept working, refusing to let the memories distract her.
“But the mission cost her everything,” Holloway continued quietly. “She was seriously injured, and Daniel was officially listed as missing. She left the service afterward and disappeared from our lives.”
Linda stared at Annie with tears in her eyes.
“You never told us.”
“I wanted to be someone who could sleep through the night,” Annie replied.
Then Daniel’s fingers moved.
His eyes opened slightly, and he turned toward the sound of her voice.
“Angel Six?” he rasped.
Annie leaned closer, tears finally escaping.
“I’m here, Daniel.”
He managed the faintest smile.
“I knew you’d come back.”
Behind them, Dr. Teague stood motionless, realizing how cruelly he’d underestimated the woman he’d mocked for months.
But Holloway had one more revelation.
He pulled a sealed military envelope from his jacket and handed it to Annie.
“There’s something Daniel insisted you receive personally. It explains why he was searching for you all these years.”
Annie looked at the name written across the envelope.
And suddenly, she understood that the hardest part of that night hadn’t even begun.
