My attorney, Mr. Harrison, opened his briefcase and handed Julian another document.
“Before you make any further decisions, Mr. Vance, I suggest you read this carefully.”
Julian snatched the papers, his confidence quickly disappearing.
“What is this supposed to mean?” he demanded.
“It means the property is legally owned by your wife. You have no authority to remove her or her children from this residence.”
Chloe let out an irritated laugh. “Julian, you told me this house was yours!”
He didn’t answer.
I watched them argue, remembering every sacrifice I’d made while Julian built his career. I’d believed we were partners. Apparently, he’d considered my loyalty a weakness.
Then Mr. Harrison placed a second folder on the porch table.
“There’s another matter. Eleanor Vance’s estate includes a financial review of several businesses connected to the family. Some documents require your attention, Mr. Vance.”
Julian suddenly went pale.
“What documents?”
My attorney remained composed. “Records indicating that your consulting company received substantial financial support from funds belonging to Mrs. Clara Vance. Her legal team will be reviewing those transactions.”
I looked at my husband.
For the first time that evening, he seemed genuinely afraid.
“Clara, sweetheart,” he began, forcing a smile. “Let’s not turn this into a misunderstanding. We can talk privately.”
I shook my head.
“You had eleven years to talk to me honestly. You chose to humiliate me in front of our children instead.”
Maya tugged at my sleeve.
“Mommy, are we going to lose our home?”
I knelt and kissed her forehead.
“No, sweetheart. We’re going to be okay.”
Behind me, Chloe dropped the property deed onto the table.
“Julian, you said she had nothing!”
He stared at the ground.
I stood and addressed them both.
“Chloe, you wanted my house. Julian, you wanted me out of your life. Well, now you can both explain your decisions to the lawyers.”
Mr. Harrison signaled to the security officers, who remained beside the entrance while he explained the next legal steps.
I took my children’s hands and walked inside.
For the first time in years, I didn’t feel afraid of what tomorrow might bring.
But just as I reached the staircase, my attorney called after me.
“Clara, there’s one final document your aunt left behind. I think you should read it before you decide what happens next.”
He opened a sealed envelope.
And when I saw the name written inside, my heart stopped.
It was the name of the person Julian had trusted most.
