Police Are Urging Drivers to Wrap Their Keys in Tinfoil: What You Need to Know

Have you ever heard that wrapping your car keys in aluminum foil could help protect your vehicle from theft? Although it sounds unusual, this trick is based on a real security concern involving modern cars with keyless entry systems. These vehicles allow drivers to unlock doors and start engines without using a traditional key, but some systems can be vulnerable to a method called a relay attack.

During a relay attack, thieves use electronic devices to extend the communication range between a car and its key fob. One device is placed near the vehicle, while another is brought close to the key, which might be inside the owner’s home. This can trick certain vehicles into detecting the key nearby, potentially allowing criminals to unlock or start the car without physically possessing it.

Aluminum foil may help prevent this by blocking some wireless signals. The principle is similar to a Faraday cage, which shields objects from electromagnetic fields. However, ordinary kitchen foil does not always provide reliable protection. Loose wrapping, small gaps, tears, and differences in wireless technology can affect its effectiveness. As the article explains, “a quick wrap is not guaranteed to provide complete protection against vehicle theft.”

A more practical option is a Faraday pouch, a small container designed to block wireless signals from key fobs. However, these pouches vary in quality and should be tested with your own vehicle. You can also reduce risks by keeping keys away from exterior doors and windows, checking your car’s security features, and asking your dealer about available updates or settings that disable passive keyless entry.

Ultimately, wrapping your keys in foil may offer some protection in certain circumstances, but it is not a complete security solution. Different vehicles have different vulnerabilities, and no single precaution prevents every type of theft. Understanding your car’s security system and combining sensible safety measures can help better protect your vehicle.
