Acclaimed classical actor dies at 98

Acclaimed actor Alan Mandell has died at the age of 98, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in theater, film, and television. Known for his powerful stage performances and dedication to the works of playwright Samuel Beckett, Mandell spent decades contributing to the performing arts.

Born on December 27, 1927, in Toronto, Canada, Mandell began his theater career in the early 1950s. One of his most memorable performances came in 1957, when he portrayed Lucky in Waiting for Godot at San Quentin State Prison before approximately 1,400 inmates.

That experience helped inspire the creation of the San Quentin Drama Workshop, which Mandell co-founded with former inmate Rick Cluchey. The initiative gave incarcerated individuals opportunities to explore acting and develop their theatrical abilities.

Mandell developed a strong connection with Beckett’s work and collaborated on productions of Waiting for Godot and Endgame. In 2012, he received an Ovation Award recognizing his contributions to theater.

His screen credits included the Coen brothers’ film A Serious Man (2009), in which he played Rabbi Marshak. He also appeared in Shortbus and Hedwig and the Angry Inch, alongside television series such as The Six Million Dollar Man, Cannon, and Grey’s Anatomy.

Even in his later years, Mandell remained committed to helping other performers. In 2025, actors Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter sought his advice while preparing for a Broadway revival of Waiting for Godot.

Beyond acting, Mandell contributed to the Los Angeles theater community as a director, producer, and supporter of the arts. His wife, Elizabeth Heller, died in 1997. He is survived by his two children and three grandchildren.

Mandell will be remembered for his extraordinary dedication to theater, his interpretations of Beckett’s work, and his lasting influence on generations of performers.
