What My Grandfather’s Investment Company Actually Was, And The Reason The Slack Message Was Not The Most Dangerous Thing I Did That Week

The stake was forty-one percent of a privately held logistics company my grandfather had built over fifty years. He never took it public, and he left it to me through a trust carefully structured so it never appeared under my married name. Gideon spent two days reviewing the documents before quietly telling me Rowan’s attorneys were going to have a very interesting few weeks.

They did. The discovery process revealed that I owned more assets personally than Rowan had in the corporate structure he believed made him powerful. His mother called twice, but I ignored her. His sister sent a long message containing both an apology and an attempt to negotiate. Rowan eventually contacted Gideon directly, asking to discuss a fair resolution.

The Slack message was read by everyone. Some people considered it inappropriate, while others thought it clarified everything that had been happening behind closed doors. Sabine resigned three weeks after the announcement. I had not asked her to leave, and I had not engineered her departure. People kept asking whether I had something to do with it, but I had no reason to invent an explanation for something I had not done.

The truth was that Rowan had spent five nights assuming I would behave as I always had. He expected me to wait, call him, cry, and eventually accept whatever explanation he offered. The Slack message changed that expectation. It was not the most dangerous thing I did that week, because the real change had already happened inside me. I had stopped waiting silently for a man to come home.
