My dad started charging me $250 a month for my room when I turned 18

Mom died when I was nine. Dad worked long shifts, kept food in the fridge, and signed my school forms. But he never seemed to care how my day had been.

“Can I get new shoes? These let water in,” I remember asking him once.

“Put on another pair of socks,” he said.

I had a father, but he never made much effort to be a dad.

On my eighteenth birthday, he slid a scrap of paper across the kitchen table.

“Pay me $250 for your room. On the first of every month.”

“You’re charging your own son rent?” I was stunned.

“You’re an adult now.”

I waited for him to laugh.

But Dad really did expect that $250 every month.

I stocked shelves, helped pay for groceries, and tried to save enough to move out.

Then my car would need repairs, or my hours would get cut.

Another month, another $250.

Dad would come home with beer or new fishing gear while I glued the soles back onto my work shoes.

Sometimes we went a week without speaking, passing each other in the hallway like strangers.

Five years later, Dad died suddenly.

For years, I had imagined how peaceful the house would feel without him.

Yet after the funeral, I stood staring at his work boots by the door, unable to put them away.

That evening, his best friend, Marcus, knocked on the door. He was holding a cardboard box sealed with packing tape.On top lay a note in Dad’s handwriting.

“You earned every dollar of this. Don’t waste it the way I wasted my chance.”

I held the paper against my chest.

For five years, I’d thought Dad was taking away my future, twenty-five hundred cents at a time. And all along, he’d been trying, in his own stubborn, terribly misguided way, to give it back to me.

I looked toward the dark computer screen.

“Thanks, Dad,” I whispered. “I just wish you’d told me while you were here.”
