What Does the M Mean on an RSVP Card?

The mysterious “M” on a wedding RSVP card has confused many guests. People often wonder what they are supposed to write after it, but the answer is much simpler than it seems. The “M” is simply the beginning of a traditional courtesy title such as Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Miss. You are expected to complete the title and then write your full name.

For example, “M” can become “Mr.” followed by your name, or “Mrs.” followed by your name. It is not asking about your meal, your marital status, or the number of guests you plan to bring. It is simply a space for the name of the invited guest.

If your preferred title does not begin with M, you can write the title you normally use instead. You can also skip the title and write your name directly. The important thing is to provide the name you want the couple to use.

For anyone creating wedding invitations, the traditional “M” is not necessary either. A simple “Name:” line can be much clearer and prevent unnecessary confusion.

In the end, there is nothing mysterious about the little “M.” Just complete it with the appropriate title and your name, then return the RSVP on time and only for the people who were actually invited.
