Part 2

Part 2: “Then tell me exactly what you did say,” I told my sister.

She looked at her children before answering, and that hesitation told me more than another denial would have. She admitted she had complained to Mom that her own kids refused their chores and said my daughter was “more responsible anyway.” Then she wrote a list that shifted most of the work onto my eight-year-old.

Her oldest son interrupted again. “You said Grandma would make her do it.”

My sister’s face went pale.

That was the first consequence she couldn’t talk around: her own child was correcting her in front of everyone.

I turned to Mom. “Did you tell my daughter I agreed she had to earn shelter?”

Mom didn’t apologize. She said she had only told the girl what she believed I would have said if I were there.

My daughter tightened her grip on my hand.

“No,” I said. “You used my name to frighten an eight-year-old into thinking her home depended on whether she obeyed you.”

Then the gas station employee, who had been quietly watching us, stepped closer and asked whether the police were already on their way—because she had something important to tell them about what my daughter said when she first came through the DOOR.
