I am fifty eight years old and for a decade I lived with heartbreak regarding my stepdaughter. I married David twelve years ago when his daughter Chloe was seventeen and still grieving the loss of her biological mother. From the very beginning I made a silent promise that I would never try to replace her mother but simply wanted a supportive role in her life. Initially we shared a genuine connection over Sunday lasagna dinners and baking. She laughed at my silly jokes and we even attempted to bake a complicated birthday cake for her father. I truly believed we were building a strong foundation for a blended family. However everything changed almost overnight when she suddenly grew distant and began avoiding me. She left for college ten hours away and stopped coming home for holidays. When I expressed concern to David about her withdrawal he quickly dismissed my worries and insisted she was dealing with teenage issues and grief.
For twelve years I continued to reach out by sending Chloe a gift for every birthday. When she turned eighteen I mailed her a delicate gold star necklace and for her twenty first I sent a professional leather handbag. For her twenty fifth birthday I sent a baking cookbook to remind her of memories we shared. Every single package was mailed back to our house unopened and stamped with a return to sender label. I spent years crying in private and storing the rejected gifts on a high closet shelf while David repeatedly assured me that Chloe simply did not want me in her life. He claimed she felt he had chosen me over her and advised me to give her space. By the time her thirtieth birthday arrived I felt completely defeated. I purchased a silver picture frame wrapped in her favorite blue paper but ultimately decided to store it away with the others. For the first time in thirteen years I chose not to send her a present.
