I Spent My Last Savings on Accessible Football Seats for My Son, Then an Entitled Stranger Took Them and Refused to Move

I had spent those same four months saving every dollar I could so he could have it.

Then, when we finally reached our accessible seats near the football field, a wealthy stranger was sitting in them. His wife’s designer purse was sitting where my son’s wheelchair was supposed to go.

When I showed him our tickets, he barely looked at them.

“Sit somewhere else.”

I told him my son couldn’t.

Those seats were specifically designed for wheelchair access.

The man shrugged.

“Not my problem.”

Then he looked at Caleb and added,

“He can watch from the concourse. I doubt he even understands football anyway.”

My son quietly touched my arm.

“It’s okay, Mom. We can go.”

Before I could answer, an elderly woman behind us stood up with an old metal lunchbox in her hands.

She looked at the man.

“Get out of that seat.”

He laughed.

Then she handed him the lunchbox.

“Open it.”

The second he looked inside, his face went pale.

And less than a minute later, the man who had refused to move was kneeling beside my son’s wheelchair asking for another chance.

But to understand why, you have to understand what that football game meant to Caleb.

“That man almost took that from me.”

“Yes.”

“But he didn’t.”

“No.”

“Because of Dorothy.”

“Yes.”

“And Harold.”

“And Harold.”

“And you.”

I looked at him in the mirror.

“Me?”

“You bought the tickets.”

“With the bracelet money.”

“With the bracelet money.”

He smiled.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“We’re coming back next season.”

“We’ll figure out the money.”

“We always do.”

I smiled.

“We always do.”

He leaned his head against the window.

“That’s another rule.”

“What?”

“You look after people.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re people too.”

I laughed softly.

“Yes.”

“So I’m supposed to look after you too.”

I looked at him in the mirror.

“Yes, Caleb.”

“We look after each other.”

“Exactly.”

A few minutes later, he fell asleep.

His favorite player’s name stretched across the back of his jersey.

The highway was almost empty.

I drove.

And somehow, the smell of the football field still clung faintly to his clothes.

Real.

Present.

Ours.
