Part 2

The doctor looked down at the notebook page, then back at the monitor, and the hand he had been holding near the ventilator controls slowly dropped to his side.

Noah was crying now, but he did not back away. He stepped closer to Emma’s bed with both hands visible, like he was afraid one wrong move would make the adults throw him out before he could prove what he had seen. The nurse took the paper from him and smoothed it against the rolling tray. Her thumb stopped at the line that said Friday, 6:38 p.m.

“Who was in the room then?” she asked quietly.

Sarah answered too fast. “Nobody. He’s making it up.”

That was when the nurse’s face changed.

She turned toward the doctor and said, “There’s a visitor log. And the camera above the hallway door covers this suite entrance.”

One new thing entered that room then, and it was not hope. It was a hospital security supervisor holding a tablet against his chest, breathing hard like he had taken the stairs. “Doctor,” he said, “you need to see the hallway footage from last night.”

Sarah’s knees bent like her body had forgotten how to stand. She grabbed the footboard of Emma’s bed, and for the first time all week, her perfect black dress looked like a costume that had slipped.

The supervisor tapped the screen once.

The nurse covered her mouth.

The doctor leaned closer.

And when I saw Sarah’s face reflected in the dark edge of that tablet, I understood the footage had caught something no chart, no ethics note, and no final assessment had ever been meant to explain…
