Iran Coach Questions FIFA Decision After Team Required to Leave U.S. Following World Cup Match

Iran’s World Cup journey has already been filled with unexpected challenges, and the team’s opening match was only part of the story. After earning a hard-fought 2-2 draw against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the focus quickly shifted away from the action on the field and toward the difficulties the squad faced behind the scenes. Head coach Amir Ghalenoei expressed frustration after learning that the team would need to leave Los Angeles immediately following the match, despite plans to remain overnight for recovery and preparation. According to the coach, the sudden change created additional complications during an already demanding tournament schedule.

The road to the World Cup has not been straightforward for Iran. In the months leading up to the tournament, the team encountered several logistical obstacles, including visa-related issues and adjustments to its training arrangements. While many national teams were able to settle into their plans well in advance, Iran found itself adapting to changing circumstances. The squad eventually established its base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, and has been working to maintain focus despite the challenges. Even so, Ghalenoei suggested that the team has repeatedly had to alter its plans and adjust to decisions beyond its control.

He also noted that many members of the Iranian football community, including federation representatives and media personnel, were not present with the team, making the experience even more challenging.

While the travel situation created frustration, the evening also included a moment of encouragement. After the match, FIFA President Gianni Infantino visited Iran’s dressing room and addressed the players directly. He praised their effort, reminded them that two important group-stage matches still remain, and encouraged them to continue representing their country with pride. Infantino highlighted the positive impact the team had made on supporters and emphasized that the world was watching their journey. His message served as a reminder that, despite the obstacles surrounding them, Iran’s World Cup story is still unfolding, with the team focused on making the most of the opportunities that lie ahead.
