A firefighter who responded to Princess Diana’s fatal Paris crash recalled her possible last words. When he arrived at the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in 1997, Diana reportedly looked at him and said, “Oh my God, what’s happened?” Agitated and trapped in the wreckage, she briefly regained consciousness before falling into a coma and later

Nearly 29 years have passed since the world mourned the death of Princess Diana, the beloved Princess of Wales, whose life was tragically cut short in a car crash in Paris. On the night of 31 August 1997, Diana was travelling through the Pont de l’Alma tunnel with her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, driver Henri Paul, and bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones when a high-speed chase with paparazzi ended in disaster. The Mercedes they were in collided violently, instantly killing Paul and Fayed, while Rees-Jones survived but suffered severe injuries. Emergency services rushed to the scene, confronting the chaotic aftermath of the crash in the darkened tunnel. Among them was firefighter Xavier Gourmelon, who later recalled the terrifying moments he spent attempting to stabilize the princess as first responders worked frantically to save lives.

Gourmelon revealed that when he initially approached the wreckage, he did not immediately recognize Diana amidst the crumpled metal of the car. As he came closer, she looked up at him, her voice trembling as she reportedly said: “Oh my God, what’s happened?” Her words, though simple, conveyed a combination of confusion, fear, and the immediate awareness of danger. Gourmelon described her as “agitated” and struggling, her consciousness flickering as paramedics worked to keep her stable. Despite their efforts, Diana’s condition deteriorated, and she slipped into unconsciousness once again. The firefighter recounted how he attempted to calm her, reassuring her that help was on the way, but the severity of her injuries made it impossible for her to remain alert.

Diana was quickly transported to the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in central Paris, where doctors worked tirelessly to save her life. Emergency resuscitation procedures were performed as medical teams fought to stabilize her condition, but the injuries she sustained in the crash were catastrophic. Despite all efforts, she succumbed to her injuries, passing away from cardiac arrest at around 4 a.m. that morning. The scene of the tunnel, which had been the site of so many hurried and frantic efforts to rescue the occupants, became etched in global memory as a symbol of tragedy, loss, and the dangers of reckless driving compounded by media intrusion.

Investigations into the crash revealed crucial details about the circumstances leading to the fatal collision. A French inquiry concluded that Henri Paul had been driving recklessly while under the influence of alcohol and prescription medications, which directly contributed to the crash. The investigation highlighted the combination of excessive speed, impaired judgment, and the pressures of being pursued by paparazzi as factors creating a near-impossible scenario for safe driving. In addition, it became clear that none of the passengers were wearing seat belts, a critical safety measure that might have lessened the impact of the collision. These details painted a stark picture of both human error and systemic risk surrounding the events of that night.
