My name is Sloane, I am twenty seven years old, and I recently buried my grandfather Edgar who raised me. I always believed both of my parents passed away in a tragic car accident when I was two. Edgar worked tirelessly until he was seventy to provide a warm and loving home for me. The day after his funeral, a mysterious letter arrived at my door containing a brass key. The enclosed note from my grandfather explained that this key would unlock a hidden compartment beneath an old rug in our attic. When I opened the secret floorboard compartment, I expected to find old family photographs or childhood keepsakes. Instead, I discovered a thick stack of legal documents that completely shattered the story I had known my entire life. I found divorce papers showing my parents had separated long before the accident that took my mother. Even worse, I found years of court notices proving my father was still alive. He had actively fought against paying child support and chose to abandon me entirely while my grandfather struggled to afford my basic needs. A final letter from Edgar explained he hid this painful reality to protect my heart, but he included my father’s last known address just in case I needed closure. Anger pushed me to make the two hour drive to a wealthy suburban neighborhood where I found the man who walked away from me. He was living a comfortable life with a new wife and two teenage children. I knocked on his door and confronted him about his decades of neglect, explaining exactly how my grandfather sacrificed everything while he avoided all responsibility.
