My grandma taught me this trick to get rid of grill residue in 4 minutes without any work. Here’s how it works.

If you’ve ever stared down a greasy, charred grill grate after a backyard cookout, you know the dread: hours of scrubbing, harsh chemicals, or worse—ruined grates from aggressive wire brushes.

But my grandma had a different approach—one that’s effortless, chemical-free, and takes just 4 minutes. No elbow grease. No fancy tools. Just a humble kitchen staple you already own.

Here’s her genius secret: steam + salt.

🔥 The 4-Minute No-Work Grill Cleaning Trick
What You’ll Need:

Coarse salt (like kosher or rock salt—about ½ cup)
Water (½ cup)
A heat-safe bowl or aluminum foil pan (disposable works great)
Your grill (gas or charcoal—just needs to be warm, not scorching hot)
How It Works:After cooking, while the grill is still warm (not piping hot—around 250–300°F), place a heat-safe bowl or foil pan on the grates.
Pour ½ cup water and ½ cup coarse salt into the bowl/pan.
Close the lid and let it sit for 4 minutes.
That’s it.

While the lid’s closed, the warm, salty steam gently loosens char, grease, and stuck-on bits from the grates above. The salt acts as a mild abrasive and deodorizer, while the steam softens residue without damaging the metal.

Open the lid, remove the bowl, and wipe the grates with a damp paper towel or soft brush. Most gunk wipes right off. For stubborn spots, give it a light scrape with a wooden or nylon grill scraper (no metal needed!).
