The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform disclosed seven years of emails and messages exchanged between the two men, raising questions about Summers’ continued communication with Epstein long after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for procuring a minor for prostitution. The revelation ignited renewed scrutiny of high-profile individuals who maintained relationships with Epstein after his criminal record was public. In a statement to The Harvard Crimson, Summers said his decision was part of a broader attempt “to rebuild trust and repair relationships with the people closest to me,” indicating the personal toll the disclosures have taken and acknowledging the need to reassess his public role.
