Married At First Sight viewers fume to Ofcom over ‘cruel’ treatment of groom

Fans of Married At First Sight UK have taken to social media — and even filed complaints with Ofcom — after what many described as the “cruel” treatment of one of the grooms during a recent episode.

The controversial scene unfolded when groom Jonathan, known for his calm and soft-spoken nature, was placed in a highly emotional confrontation during the dinner party episode. Tensions between the couples were already running high when other cast members began criticizing Jonathan’s behavior, accusing him of being “cold” and “unemotional” toward his partner.

However, viewers saw things differently. Many argued that Jonathan was being unfairly singled out and humiliated on national television. Twitter and Facebook were flooded with comments like “This is emotional bullying, plain and simple” and “He doesn’t deserve to be treated like this for being quiet and kind.”

Some fans went further, claiming the show’s editing deliberately made him look distant or uncaring, while ignoring the pressure he was under behind the scenes. The situation escalated after the episode aired, with reports that Ofcom received dozens of complaints citing concerns about “psychological cruelty” and “unethical manipulation for entertainment.”

Others defended the show, arguing that Married At First Sight thrives on drama and difficult emotional situations — but even many longtime fans agreed that this time, it crossed the line.
