Zohran Mamdani scored a historic victory in the New York City mayoral race.
Tensions were high
In a historic landslide, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani has been elected New York City’s next mayor, crushing former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Mamdani racked up over 1.03 million votes, surpassing the combined total of all his opponents. His victory marks a groundbreaking moment: Mamdani becomes both the city’s first Muslim mayor and its first mayor of South Asian heritage.Even before the election, tensions were high between left-leaning Zohran Mamdani and President Trump who has deep, personal ties to New York City.
A nation betrayed by Donald Trump
Trump’s ominous answer
President Trump, who had been outspoken about who he wanted as New York’s next mayor, was predictably not thrilled by the results—or by Mamdani’s victory speech, which undoubtedly reached him. After the election, Trump took to Truth Social to post a strikingly ominous message:
“…AND SO IT BEGINS!”
The cryptic post has sparked widespread speculation. Given Trump’s previous claims that Mamdani is a “communist” and his threats to cut federal funding to New York City if Mamdani won, many believe the financial pressure could be his first move against the new mayor.
Trump has also warned of possible arrest or deportation should Mamdani take office, leading some to interpret his Truth Social message as a hint that such drastic measures might be on the table.
