President Trump announced in a TruthSocial post on Tuesday that Republicans would have a “Midterm convention” ahead of next year’s elections.
“The Republicans are going to do a Midterm Convention in order to show the great things we have done since the Presidential Election of 2024. Time and place to be determined. Stay tuned, it will be quite the Event, and very exciting! President DJT” Trump wrote.
Trump initially floated the idea of Republicans holding a convention ahead of the midterms last month.
“The Republican Party is doing really well. Millions of people have joined us in our quest to MAKE AMERICA, GREAT AGAIN. We won every aspect of the Presidential Election and, based on the great success we are having, are poised to WIN BIG IN THE MIDTERMS,” the president said.
Trump went on to praise the GOP’s fundraising efforts and his administration’s efforts to reverse actions taken by former President Biden in his administration.
“In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!!”
The president’s comments last month came amid speculation that Democrats were considering holding their own gathering ahead of the midterms.
A Democratic National Committee spokesperson said in a statement that it was considering holding a large gathering ahead of the 2026 midterms to tout rising stars and midterm candidates, confirming previous reporting from Axios that the party was mulling the idea.
“Americans everywhere are fired up and ready to fight back against Trump’s reckless policies — including his budget betrayal that cuts health care and food assistance for millions of people,” the DNC spokesperson said in a statement.
“To showcase our tremendous candidates running up and down the ballot and harness the amazing grassroots energy we’re already seeing, several options are on the table for next year, including hosting a large-scale gathering before the midterms,” the spokesperson added.
A DNC spokesperson responded to Trump’s announcement on Tuesday, saying “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
“Americans everywhere are fired up and ready to fight back against Trump’s reckless policies — including his budget betrayal that cuts health care and food assistance for millions of people,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “To showcase our tremendous candidates running up and down the ballot and harness the amazing grassroots energy we’re already seeing, several options are on the table for next year, including hosting a midterm convention. The sincerest form of flattery is imitation and we’re amused the President is following our lead.”
