Sticky Kitchen Cabinets? Here’s How to Clean Years of Grease and Restore Their Natural Shine

Sticky kitchen cabinets are a common issue in well-used kitchens, especially those near stoves or range hoods. The sticky film is typically a mix of cooking oils, airborne grease, dust, and time. This grime doesn’t come off with a quick wipe, but fortunately, you can restore your cabinets using natural ingredients from your pantry—no harsh chemicals needed.

The reason cabinets get so sticky is due to microscopic oil particles released during cooking. These particles land on surfaces and blend with dust to form a stubborn residue, especially around high-touch areas like cabinet handles and doors near the stove. Over time, this builds up and becomes difficult to remove without the right approach.

To get started, gather basic supplies: white vinegar, baking soda, dish soap, warm water, microfiber cloths, an old toothbrush, and a spray bottle. Mix a cleaning solution of equal parts vinegar and warm water, and add a squirt of dish soap if desired. Spray directly on cabinets or onto a cloth and wipe in circular motions, focusing on edges and corners.

For tougher spots, make a paste with baking soda and water. Apply it to sticky areas, scrub gently with a soft brush, and let sit for a couple of minutes before wiping clean. Rinse with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly to prevent wood damage.

A surprising but effective hack: combine baking soda with a bit of vegetable oil to lift heavy grease. Rub gently, wipe clean, and follow with the vinegar spray. If natural solutions fall short, safe commercial degreasers like Krud Kutter or Simple Green may help—just test first.

To keep cabinets clean, use your range hood while cooking, wipe handles weekly, and deep-clean every few months. With regular care and these natural methods, your kitchen cabinets can shine like new again—restoring the heart of your home.
