Are pillow tags illegal to remove?

Is it illegal to cut the tag from your pillow? The quick answer is no—if you own it. The scary wording, “UNDER PENALTY OF LAW THIS TAG NOT TO BE REMOVED EXCEPT BY THE CONSUMER,” has frightened several of us mid-snuggle.

But here’s the truth: the law label is intended for manufacturers and retailers, not consumers.

It is there to ensure that corporations reveal what is within bedding items such as pillows and mattresses, particularly after a period when unscrupulous manufacturers packed products with a variety of unsanitary materials.

The label protects you throughout the purchasing process by requiring companies to be transparent. After you’ve purchased the item, you can lawfully cut the tag. The caution only applies prior to the sale. So, yes, you can take your scissors without fear of federal investigators breaking in.

However, preserving the tag can still be beneficial.

It frequently includes information you may require for returns, warranty claims, or cleaning instructions. It’s also a good idea to save tags on products you might give or resell, because certain organizations prefer original labeling for sanitary reasons.

There are a few exceptions, particularly for baby items. Car seats and baby mattresses frequently contain safety stickers that should remain affixed. Removing them may eliminate important information or possibly violate warranties.

The dramatic language on the label is a remnant of past regulations and is essentially obsolete now, but it persisted because to how tight the rules were once. While it is not unlawful, shutting it off without checking could result in practical problems later.

So, can you cut the pillow tag?

Yes—completely legal. Simply assess whether you’ll need the information first. If not, feel free to cut away. That irritating, crinkly little nuisance will no longer bother you, and you will be in compliance with all applicable regulations.
