8 Tips from My MIL That Made a Fool Out of Me—Story of the Day

I had always struggled with household tasks and never really had to manage things on my own. But after marrying Leonard, I took on the challenge, determined to prove myself. My mother-in-law, Prudence, offered her “helpful” advice, which often led to disasters.

Prudence suggested adding lemon slices to the dishwasher for a fresh scent, but it clogged the filter and caused damage. Her tip to clean windows with newspaper left me with smeared ink, and using coffee grounds scratched my pans. Her advice on using sugar water on the lawn attracted insects, and bleach ruined my favorite silk dress.

Her final suggestion was to paint our bedroom red to rekindle romance, which Leonard hated. Realizing Prudence’s advice was sabotaging me, I decided to turn the tables. At a dinner, I revealed my new look—an intentionally bald wig—and followed her tips in a twist, leaving Prudence embarrassed and Leonard supportive.
